Discover the new grape varieties from the Gouze family

Located in Montagne, not far from the illustrious Saint-Émilion, the Domaines de la Famille Gouze embody elegance and innovation within the Bordeaux winegrowing landscape. Their estates Château Malineau and Château Enclos de Bayard, renowned for the exceptional quality of their wines, are distinguished this year by a bold initiative: the introduction of two new grape varieties, Syrah and Marselan.

These varieties were planted three years ago (2021), and each represents 300 vines planted.

A family estate with deep roots

The Gouze family estate is much more than just a vineyard. It represents the culmination of generations of enthusiasts who have succeeded in perpetuating the art of winegrowing while remaining open to innovation. Set in an exceptional terroir, this estate has always been committed to producing wines of character, reflecting a tradition that has been carefully preserved and enriched over time.

Their emblematic cuvées, such as Saint Emilion, Saint Emilion Grand Cru and Montagne Saint Emilion, are made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes.

The introduction of Syrah: A Mediterranean touch in Bordeaux

Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of the Rhône Valley, has found a new home in the Gouze family vineyards.

Syrah: a grape variety with a strong character

Known for its intense aromas of red fruit and spices, Syrah was introduced to France in Roman times and has grown in popularity over the centuries. Today, it is grown in several wine-growing regions around the world. Syrah is appreciated for its ability to produce rich, complex wines with a fine tannic structure.

Introducing Syrah to Montagne is a bold move. By adapting this Mediterranean grape variety to the soil of Bordeaux, the Gouze family hopes to create unique wines, combining the robustness and complexity of Syrah with the finesse and elegance of the Bordeaux terroir.

Marselan: The Alliance of Tradition and Innovation

Marselan is a relatively recent variety, born in 1961 from a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, carried out by INRA and ENSAM. Although less well-known than its parents, Marselan is appreciated for its robustness and its ability to produce fruity, well-balanced wines.

Marselan: A Varietal at the Crossroads

Marselan is distinguished by its small berries and moderate yields, producing wines with intense aromas of black fruit, with spicy and floral notes. Its resistance to disease also makes it a sustainable and promising choice for winemakers.

By introducing Marselan, the Gouze family is banking on innovation while respecting the region's winegrowing heritage. This grape variety, which is still not widely grown in Bordeaux, adds a new dimension to the estate's wines, bringing a rich aroma and extra complexity.

A Promising Future for Domaines de la Famille Gouze

The introduction of Syrah and Marselan into the vineyards of Domaines de la Famille Gouze is an exciting initiative that promises to diversify and enrich the range of wines produced. This approach reflects the estate's desire to renew itself and explore new possibilities, while remaining true to its identity and terroir. It also reflects this desire to adapt to different climatic changes, as these grape varieties are renowned for their robustness and resistance to heat and changing climates.

Wine lovers will soon have the opportunity to discover these new creations, the fruit of a combination of tradition and innovation. In this way, the Gouze family is establishing itself as a dynamic player on the Bordeaux wine scene, ready to take on the challenges of the future with boldness and passion.
